WHAT IS AUTOPHAGY?
To realize the health benefits of Autophagy from Keto, one needs to understand Autophagy if one is practicing or considering The Ketogenic Diet For Health And Longevity.
AUTOPHAGY is a derivation of the two Greek words “auto”, (meaning self), and “phagy” (meaning eating).
Autophagy (or autophagocytosis) is a natural, regulated mechanism of the cell which disassembles unnecessary and dysfunctional components.
It promotes the orderly degradation and recycling of cellular components.
Amazingly it allows one’s body to use its own protein in the form of dead and damaged cells and bacteria which have been previously stored away.
In short, it means “self-eating”.
It is a normal physiological process of the body that deals with the beneficial destruction of cells.
It is a great form of Detoxification.
Autophagy is a survival mechanism, and thus a way that the body cleverly responds to stress in order to protect itself.
It is actually your body’s normal way of carrying out cellular renewal processes.
Autophagy is very beneficial and it’s now being noted to be a key in preventing serious diseases.
Autophagy has many anti-aging benefits because it helps destroy and reuse damaged components occurring in vacuoles (spaces) within cells.
The autophagy process basically works by using waste produced inside cells to create new “building materials” that aid in repair and regeneration.
It is important for “cleaning up” the body and defending against the negative effects of stress.
If one’s natural recycling mechanism doesn’t work, damaged cells and their parts start to accumulate in the body.
When such occurs, one’s body ends up unable to neutralize cancer cells and cells infected by dangerous viruses and bacteria which leads to various illnesses and problems.
In short, animals evolved using Autophagy to conserve energy and repair damage when energy became scarce, but it is also a critical part of the human immune system’s ability to battle illness and reduce risk of cancer.
Humans are not the only species to benefit from Autophagy.
In fact, Autophagy has been observed in yeast, mold, plants, worms, flies and mammals.
Much of the research to date on Autophagy has involved rats and yeast.
Research continues to show that Autophagy processes are very important responses to starvation and stress across many species.
In short, Autophagy is a process of taking out the trash and replacing cell parts.
HISTORY OF AUTOPHAGY
1n 1974, the first person who discovered Autophagy was Belgian biochemist Dr. Christian de Duve.
For his discovery, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1974.
Afterwards, Dr. Yoshinori Ohsumi, a Japanese cell biologist, spent years studying how human cells get rid of their waste and was awarded the Nobel Prize for his work and findings.
A very valuable explanation by Dr. Ohsumi can be found on YouTube under his presentation What is autophagy? A dynamic cellular recycling process
On October 3, 2016 Dr. Yoshinori Ohsumi received the Nobel Prize.
He discovered and proved that Autophagy gets more intensive when the body is undergoing some stress.
Such stress can be fasting, calorie restriction, or even starvation.
In all his studies, Dr. Yoshinori Ohsumi used starvation and fasting to encourage the body to break down toxic cells and get rid of all the “garbage”.
WHAT IS KETO?
The Ketogenic Diet is also referred to here as the Ketogenic Lifestyle which many have adopted for life.
For hundreds of thousands of years our Cavemen and Cavewomen ancestors, whose DNA we inherited, hunted and lived on prey consisting of saturated fat and protein.
It is important to note that our Homo Sapien Ancestors, who existed as hunters for 200,000 years BC, did not even begin cultivating crops until about 11,000 BC.
This time of 11,000 BC was shortly after the Ice Age, which started about 2.6 Million years ago and ended in about 11,700 BC.
Thus, by 11,700 BC, our DNA was completely established well before the start of any crop cultivation.
These Cavemen and Cavewomen were very strong, lean and fast so as to catch their prey.
Additionally, these Cavemen were only usually fortunate to catch just enough food for one meal a day which meant they fasted intermittently for about 20 hours a day…later referred to herein as “Intermittent Fasting”.
These Cavemen and Cavewomen did not get up in the morning and have Breakfast of Champions with sugar and milk and Pop Tarts.
WHAT IS mTOR?
The acronym mTOR stands for “Mammalian target of rapamycin”.
It is an enzyme that is the master controller of protein synthesis.
mTOR functions as a serine/threonine protein kinase whose presence increases cell growth, cell proliferation, cell motility, cell survival, protein synthesis, Autophagy, and transcription.
A protein kinase is a kinase enzyme that modifies other molecules, mostly proteins, by chemically adding phosphate groups to them (phosphorylation).
mTOR is increased by the presence of Glucose and Amino Acids which make up protein.
Thus its presence is high when Glucose and amino acids are high in the body, and it is low when glucose and only moderate protein is present.
The takeaway here is growing evidence has demonstrated that the presence of mTOR plays a pivotal role in suppressing Autophagy.
Moreover, scientists still emphasize that the exact way that Autophagy processes work is just beginning to be understood.
HOW IS AUTOPHAGY TRIGGERED?
The biochemistry and organic chemistry of Autophagy is and can get quite complicated and deep.
However, for the layman the important takeaways are:
1. THE FASTING TRIGGER
Fasting will cause Autophagy because it limits the amount of protein that one is consuming.
Fasting is a sure fire way to stimulate Autophagy.
Further, it is notable that even during fasting, as the result of Autophagy, one has the same amount of proteins and carbohydrates in their digestive system as they would if they ate animal protein.
Surprisingly, studies show that those on fasting or ketosis still have approximately the same amount of proteins and carbohydrates in their digestive system as they would if they ate animal protein.
2. THE KETO TRIGGER
The beautiful thing with Keto is it can provide the benefits of Autophagy without having to fast.
Keto may or may not cause Autophagy.
For it to stimulate the mTOR one can maintain the correct relationship of protein but the protein level will have to be high.
However, under normal circumstances in ketosis, the amount of protein is low enough that mTOR is not activated.
Being in ketosis while eating the ketogenic diet can support the Autophagy process and recycle specific proteins through chaperone-mediated Autophagy.
This is probably possible even while eating as long as your carbs and protein are really low.
However, if one sticks to the target percentages of the Keto diet and overindulges in very high quantities of protein then one will not be in a state of Autophagy.
BENEFITS OF AUTOPHAGY
During the aging process whether one is healthy or not, bodily cells are constantly being damaged.
This is part of one’s normal metabolic process and if one is under stress this process is accelerated.
Autophagy plays a huge part in cleaning up and clearing out such damaged cells as well as old cells and even cancerous cells from one’s body.
Some of the main amazing benefits of Autophagy are:
- helps the nervous system
- improves the immune system
- healthy for the heart
- decreases cardiomyopathy
- improves metabolism
- slows down the aging process
- prevents or delays neurodegenerative diseases
- reduces inflammation
- boosts body’s natural ability to function
- improves skin complexion
- battles illness
- reduces the risk of cancer
- cells work better
- makes cells act younger
- reduces one’s biological age vs one’s chronological age
- it is the process of “taking out the trash” and replacing cell parts
- makes healthier cells work more efficiently.
- in Alzheimer’s disease removes amyloid
- in Parkinson’s removes ⍺-synuclein
- in Dementia type-3 diabetes is reduced
- reduces high blood sugar
- Regulates inflammation by reducing it and also increasing it when an invader arrives
- helps the body fight infectious diseases
- fights infections
- improves muscle performance and repair while reducing the incidence of muscle damage
- Improves gut health of the digestive system
- Improves skin health
- supports healthy weight as increases fat burning while sparing protein, lowers insulin, and increases metabolic efficiency
- minimizes cell death (Apoptosis) which is programmed cell death by encouraging cell repair.
- increases energy
- provides cells with molecular building blocks and energy

- reduces liver disease
- reduces autoimmune diseases
MONITORING KETONES TO BE SUCCESSFUL FOR BOTH KETOSIS AND AUTOPHAGY
The only exact way to be sure one is in Ketosis is to use Ketone Testing.
This is very important, as explained, to be successful with Intermittent Fasting.
Following are the standard three ways to test for one’s state of Ketosis:
1. KETONE URINE TESTING
Smackfat Ketone Strips for Ketogenic Diet and Diabetics – Precise Ketone Measurement and Supports Ketone Adaptation, 100 Strips are for monitoring and tracking progress on a day to day basis for an initial start period.
These Ketone strips which measure the Ketones in one’s urine will give Ketone test results, initially.
Urine testing is it is very good and inexpensive for beginners on the Keto diet.
However, one’s chemistry will soon change and render urine testing useless.
Thus, one should also consider the permanent Keto blood testing monitor with a lifetime guarantee, as described below.
2. KETONE BREATH TESTING
Regarding breath testing for a state of Ketosis, there are a couple of products on the market but as of March 12, 2019, there have been too many user complaints to recommend this type of testing.
3. KETONE BLOOD TESTING
The most accurate and permanent way known to test for Ketones and to monitor one’s state of Ketosis is the Ketone blood monitoring.
